Merge combines all iMessages by contact, not by address. This means that if someone in your contacts messages you from a different address, the entire conversation is merged and an address divider is placed to show which address the person is sending from.

 

The contact info is more quickly accessible because it is revealed when scrolling. You can also switch which address to send to easily from the provided menu.

Merge's functionality is now implemented in Mac OS X by Apple. The improved contact info tab bar has no been implemented by Apple in iOS 7.
